Interesting illustration of the power of ranked voting

May 16, 2012 in Uncategorized

Here is a long list of sample issues which illustrate instant run off. Whoever did this hurriedly assembled a list but it does show how collective decisions can be reached using the computer. I only picked ten and would be happy to coordinate another project with a different list. Be sure to click next and then final rounds.

May 1, 2012 in Uncategorized

Our weekend Encampment turned out to be peaceful, inspiring, educational and full of community-building. It was also very welcoming, as evidenced by all the folks who stopped by and joined in. Here’s a video by Paul Richmond of the start of the weekend.

Great Meeting: Another OWS Experiment in Direct Democracy

April 9, 2012 in OWS, Smile Inducing

Part 1

In the 1850s the 1% convened at Union Square in New York City to figure out how to push their agenda forward. On April 4, 2012, the 99% convened to think about the rest of us. Long a hot spot for radical activism, Union Square is the perfect spot for the 99% to come together and discuss what we see today, what we’d like to see, and how we think we might get there. The great meeting is just another experiment in direct democracy. In this clip you’ll see highlights from the break out group I was involved in discussing “What we see.” Each of us have different reasons for why we Occupy. This is a small window into the world of OWS.
